The world is quite literally your oyster when it comes to choosing the best destination for your next family holiday. But in reality, that’s part of the problem – with so much choice, it can all get a little confusing.

And trying to satisfy the needs and wants of your partner and your teens certainly complicates the process. What you want to do is find a destination that’s not too far from the UK that has a little something for everyone. And we have just the place to find some family holiday inspiration: the Costa Blanca in Spain. Here are the reasons why:

The scenic surrounds

When it comes to family holiday inspiration, there are few places in the world that compare to the beauty of the 200 km shoreline that makes up the ‘white coast’ or Costa Blanca in the south-east of Spain. The beautiful shoreline is lapped by azure Mediterranean waters, and there is a plethora of water-based activities on offer for the adventurous family members while the less adventurous family members can enjoy the beach bars, pristine beaches, and wonderful sea-facing restaurants.

The hub that is Alicante

The bustling port town of Alicante, a short two-hour direct flight from the UK, is a wonderful starting point for your family vacation. If you’re looking for some family holiday inspiration for Alicante, then we recommend strolling along the artistic Explanada de Espana to get a taste of the Spanish culture. The gorgeous tree-lined walkway takes visitors past the harbour and boasts magnificent ocean views.

La Playa de San Juan

For some real family holiday inspiration, we recommend Googling la Playa de San Juan. This incredible piece of paradise boasts blue flag status and is 4.5 km from central Alicante. It’s bound to delight teens looking for some beach time. Make at least a day of the trip by enjoying the shops, cafes, restaurants and bars along the beach as well as the watersports on offer.

The castle of Santa Barbara

One of the best sites in the area to visit, the castle of Santa Barbara – a medieval fortress with phenomenal views –  sits atop Mount Benacantil and is home to the Museum of the City of Alicante. Your teens might need a little coaxing but the trip is well worth it. As a note, it’ll probably be best to take the lift to the top and walk down.

The charming town of Calpe

This gorgeous old fishing town serves as all the family holiday inspiration you could want. Just 64 km from Alicante, Calpe shouldn’t just be a day trip, it should be the reason you head to the Costa Blanca in the first place because while small, it has so much to offer.

The town itself has a range of interesting museums; from the Collectors museums and the Archaeology Museum to the ethnological museum, the Fiesta Museum and the comic museum – it’s got enough in the way of museums to keep the whole family entertained for a good couple of days. Try head to at least one of the markets that take place weekly, the Saturday morning street market in the old town being one of the must visits.

If you’re not keen on a whirlwind trip of Costa Blanca, then you don’t need to head anywhere other than Calpe. The number of gorgeous beaches here make it difficult to choose which to visit, but we recommend the two on either side of the iconic Rock of Ifach – Playa Levante (La Fossa) and Playa Del Arenal (Bol). But many of the beaches have blue flag status so in reality, you can’t go wrong.

If you and your family are interested in more than just beaches and museums, then Calpe is still a good idea. For the families who like to bond over adventures outdoors then a trip to the Parque Natural de Penyal D'Ifach is a must. The Rock of Ifach was declared a nature reserve 30 years ago and is a haven for incredible birds and home to wonderful and indigenous fauna and flora. There is a route to the top of the rock but only embark on this if you and your family are fit and up for a challenge.

The best months to head to Calpe are April, May, June and then September and October. The summer months are also nice but it’s peak season, and things can be expensive and the place is totally overcrowded. If you do want to take on the crowds, it’s best to book early.
