The world is teeming with exceptional holiday destinations that are exciting, unusual and eclectic. But booking a holiday now isn’t quite the same as it used to be – travelling with your family is enormously enriching, but you have to carefully consider what the best destination for them might be, and what those destinations may offer your family.

This year has absolutely flown by, and summer seems to have just crept up on everyone. What a surprise it is to find that it’s already in full swing. If you’re in the same boat, and it’s just dawned on you that you haven’t planned a little getaway with the family, fear not. We’ve done the legwork for you and found the top family holiday destinations for summer 2016:

Çıralı, Turkey*

If you’re averse to crowds of tourists, people trying to sell you every trinket possible and tourist-trap excursions, then Çıralı in Antalya is the place to go. This secret spot is one of the top family holiday destinations to ensure that you avoid queues and maximise on QT with the family. A lush oasis of lemon groves, mountains, forests and of course beaches, Çıralı will have your family in awe at its natural beauty. Here your family can enjoy days exploring ancient temples and tombs, savour incredible meals in the quaint beach town restaurants, and enjoy trips to shingle beach. The beach nestled in a protected bay is a prime place to spot loggerhead turtles that lay their eggs between June and July, or you might even be lucky to see the eggs hatching mid-July to mid-September.

Vouliagmeni, Greece

Greece has always been a popular summer destination. It's rich history, artistic gems, ancient monuments and idyllic islands definitely puts it on the top family holiday destinations list. And the best way to see Greece is to combine all of its best parts. A trip, possibly more appropriate for slightly older children, that combines a history tour of Athens with a stay along the Athens Riviera should go down a treat! Explore the historical sites and then head to Vouliagmeni, where the family can spend hours swimming in the gorgeous waters, or spend their time water-skiing, jet-skiing, playing volleyball or windsurfing at the Astir beach. Keep in mind that the Astir beach is quite a famous one, so everything around it is a little more expensive than the around the public beach nearby.

Île d’Oléron, France

This is by far one of the top family holiday destinations for active families. The second largest island in France, Île d’Oléron is a haven for those who enjoy cycling. It has approximately 70 miles of bike lanes, which traverse marshlands, pine forests and stretches of fields. It’s also a great destination for those who enjoy oysters, as those found here are some of the best in France. But the attractions don’t stop there – the island naturally boasts stretches of unspoilt beaches, perfect for days spent soaking up the sun, little ones playing in the sand, and families swimming in the sea. Do you have a family that enjoys the outdoors? Then this is definitely a great destination for you.

Calpe, Spain

If you are looking for a place that has a little something for everyone, then Calpe, along Spain’s Costa Blanca, is your kind of place. Getting there involves just a short 2-hour flight from the UK to Alicante, and then less than an hour’s drive to Calpe. This incredible coastal town, which was once a thriving fishing village, is one of the top family holiday destinations for families with children of all ages. With ample activities, which range from tours of historical sites to watersports, and from hiking to lazing on the beach, this town has no shortage of wonderful things to do in the summer. Your family is bound to love the town’s pristine beaches, the Natural Park of Penyal d'Ifac, and the eclectic and interesting Spanish culture that permeates almost every aspect of the gorgeous town – not to mention the incredible local restaurants that serve hearty portions of delicious (and healthy!) Spanish cuisine. If you are looking for an option that’s sure to delight your whole family, then this is it.
